World Population Day, observed every year on July 11th, is a moment to reflect on the pressing issues and opportunities that come with a growing global population. This day, established by the United Nations in 1989, encourages us to consider the well-being of people around the world. One crucial aspect of this well-being is healthy living, especially as average longevity increases.

The Global Population and Health Connection

As the world's population continues to rise, so does the complexity of our health challenges. According to recent estimates, the global population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. This growth brings with it a host of concerns, from food security and environmental sustainability to healthcare access and the management of chronic diseases. Among these issues, obesity and weight-related health problems stand out as significant challenges that affect millions of people worldwide.

The Weight of the Matter

Obesity has become a global epidemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. Today, more than 1.9 billion adults are overweight, and of these, over 650 million are obese. This rise in obesity rates is not just a statistic; it's a call to action.

Excess weight and obesity are linked to a range of serious health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and more. Obesity was recognized as a disease by the American Medical Association in 2013. With this recognition, there has been a great deal of research into obesity and its treatment, as well as starting to identify root causes (not always eating too much and/or moving too little).
